Prague, Czech Republic, 29 April 2010 – Greenpeace denounced the Czech Environment Ministry’s decision today to accept a seriously flawed environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the expansion of the Czech Republic’s largest coal-fired power plant as a shamefully manipulated political decision, which does not respect expert analysis. The energy giant, CEZ, forced through the substandard plans for the extension of Prunerov II.
International — Prague, Czech Republic – Today the Minister of Environment, Mrs Rut Bizkova, began her transformation of the Ministry of Environment by terminating the Department of Climate and Air Protection and firing a Deputy Minister who was critical of plans to expand the Prunerov brown coal-fired power plant. Environmental organizations considered today’s announcement by the Ministry, which was responsible for climate policy, to be an unnecessary capitulation to the state energy monopoly, CEZ, which runs the power plant. It further shows Minister Bizkova’s determination to force through approval of her former employer’s expansion plans for Prunerov despite the harmful environmental and climate impacts of the coal plant.
Copenhagen, Denmark — The Czech Ministry of Environment publicly confirmed today that it has received a request from the Federated States of Micronesia for a transboundary Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of its biggest coal-fired power plant, Prunerov (1). This is the first time that current or future climate victims could legally influence a foreign industry by arguing that it endangers them due to greenhouse gas emissions.
